How Stress Affects Your SkinWhen we think of the physical effects of stress, we often complain of tension headaches or stomach upset. But did you know that even moderate stress can negatively affect your skin?

Even though we look at our face several times a day (at least!), we don’t often associate stress levels with our appearance, but in fact, our face is one the first places signs of stress will show. One of the most common physical signs of stress on our face are breakouts or acne. Under chronic stress, adrenal glands stimulate our sebaceous glands, causing them to secrete more oil. This overstimulation of oil glands is a perfect environment for the development of acne.

Another way stress can affect your skin is from elevated cortisol levels. Known as the “stress hormone,” cortisol regulates many of the fluctuations that occur in our bodies from stress, such as blood flow. The increased blood flow causes the expansion of capillaries, which can cause a red or inflamed appearance, and in some cases, rosacea, or chronic redness and inflammation of the face.

Increased cortisol can also lead to dryness, as the skin in unable to hold water. In addition, high levels of cortisol can also lead to poor absorption of nutrients from the diet, which can cause our immune system to suffer, leading to slower healing. Cortisol also regulates blood sugar, and chronic stress can elevate blood sugar, damaging the collagen and elastin in the skin.

Getting at least 7 to 9 hours of sleep is one of the first steps in lowering stress levels. Lack of sleep can cause our bodies to release cortisol, leading to increased dryness and inflammation. Lack of sleep can also cause eye bags and puffiness as fluid pools under our eyes.

When it comes to our appearance, we definitely are what we eat, and eating a balanced, healthy diet can help to reduce stress by keeping our blood sugar in check. Avoid high saturated fat comfort foods like ice cream or macaroni and cheese. Olive oil is a super food for our face, as the antioxidants in olive oil work to shut down damaging free radicals. Sardines, green tea, kale, tomatoes, and walnuts are other superfoods that “feed” our face with essential nutrients and help fight aging.

Drink at least 7-8 glasses of filtered water daily. Water is essential for keeping skin hydrated, as dehydrated skin leads to fine lines and wrinkles. Try drinking at least 1 or 2 glasses first thing in the morning. This will not only wake up your digestive system but also keep you from over-indulging in skin-dehydrating coffee or soda.

Most importantly, get moving! Regular exercise has not only been proven to reduce stress levels, but sweating helps to eliminate toxins in the body and improves blood flow, which helps transport oxygen and nutrients to your skin. It’s impossible to avoid stress, but re-evaluating how we manage stress is vital to not only improving our skin, but our overall health.

I saw their Botox special on social media. That led to yelp and google reviews which are awesome. I was created with kindness and was taken to the treatment room right away. I didn’t have to wait. Dana came in and is an expert. Her education is impressive. We discussed realistic expectations and other options to help with my concerns. Their packages are worth it and not overly expensive. I also connected with Paloma about microneedling. Once I went over their monthly membership, it gets me a facial every month and a set Botox price of $10 per unit. Other perks as well. I’m stoked I found my new care team. Try them, I bet you’ll love them too.

During and after completing Ultherapy and microneedling sessions with Paloma, I vowed I would tell everyone about my outstanding, even “pleasurable” experience with her. And then there was Spring Break. That was mid March, and now it’s early May. The vow keeps pricking my mind, and I just realized, this is actually a very good time to follow through with it. I should begin by saying I’ll be 70yo in November, so I’ve not been generating collagen several decades now, and gravity has taken its toll. My lower face was beginning to sag, and my neck was getting the “turkey flap.” The skin along my jawline had loosened, and the marionette lines around my mouth were deepening. I had dimpling in the chin area, and I don’t even have dimples! What to do? I’d filled them before and wasn’t thrilled. Filler is a tricky thing with me; maybe because I’m thin skinned or simply because I’m older? I’m vain and wasn’t liking the way I looked, but what to do when you don’t have the pocketbook for a face lift, or even just a lower face and neck lift? After consulting with our cherished Dr. Wright, it was decided I’d best be able to reach my goals with separate sessions of both Ultherapy and Microneedling. She paired me with Paloma, and wow, how could an Ultherapy session ever be described as “pleasurable?” Paloma is one of the most engaging, amusing, compassionate, and PROFESSIONAL souls ever. She’s also VERY SKILLED and VERY FOCUSED. How is she so attentive, fun and kind while remaining so intense, concentrating on her work at hand? Throughout the session, I wondered how we could chat so easily as she simultaneously passed the wand that delivered energy waves into to the deeper levels of skin, and calmly reassuring me all the while? She carefully navigated the whole of my face and neck, section by section, always attentive to what the screen was cuing, while keeping me distracted from the “pings.” I’d had this procedure once before with Dr. Jessica, perhaps a decade ago, but I didn’t recall it being this intense. I guess ten years changes things, or maybe the way I experience them? Paloma deliberately told me ahead of time which areas would be more sensitive, and she’d talk me through them with her soft voice and engaging conversation. She used words to encourage me: “One more quick one here,” or “next I’ll be working here, and it will be easier for you.” We spoke about the areas that especially bothered me, and she passed the wand delivering heat energy, and focusing more on those concerns. I don’t have enough knowledge about Ultherapy to speak too confidently, but Paloma may have said the wand signaled where to direct more heat, and she did so either by making another pass or by increasing the intensity of the energy waves? What I DO know is that it’s 2 months later, and I’m FEELING and VISIBLY SEEING the results! I know if I return someday, I’ll be seeing Paloma! Needless to say, I am very pleased, grateful, and happy with the results! Thank you so much, Paloma, and thank you, Dr. Jessica!

Just had microneedling with PDRN done last week with Paloma and it was such a great experience. She detailed everything she was doing, asked if I had questions multiple times, made sure I was always comfortable and overall communicated exceptionally! Highly recommend her.

Love this place! Dr. Wright is awesome, fun to talk to and good at what she does. I had the Botox/disport, and it lasted 6 months, she used just enough to make the forehead look natural and I can still move and have expressions. The location is easy south Austin, off of 5th street close to MoPac. N0 wait time, in and out in 30 minutes! yay I am busy. Her staff is great and friendly. I highly recommend Rejuvenate Austin!
