Botox is a drug derived from a toxic byproduct of the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. When injected into facial creases and wrinkles, botox blocks nerve signals and paralyzes the muscles responsible for these facial features, leaving a smoother, relaxed, younger appearance.
Most often applied to frown lines, forehead lines, and crow’s feet around the eyes, botox is not recommended for wrinkles caused by gravitational pull or sun damage. The effects of botox can be fully appreciated within 7-14 days, however there may be a few side effects to be aware of in the meantime.
Botox injections are delivered through a very fine hypodermic needle. While clients may experience slight discomfort with treatment, the three most common side effects you may experience are:
- Bruising and/or bleeding at the injection site
- Localized pain and/or tenderness
- Inflammation and/or swelling
As with any procedure involving an injection, bruising and/or bleeding may persist temporarily. In order to reduce the likelihood of either of these, we recommend that our clients abstain from using alcohol for at least one week prior to the procedure. Additionally, for clients who frequently use aspirin or other anti-inflammatory medications, it is recommended to stop taking them for two weeks prior to treatment in order to prevent and alleviate excessive bruising.
Localized pain and/or tenderness is not uncommon and should subside within hours to days. It is recommended that clients who have received botox injections avoid touching or rubbing the injection site for at least 24 hours, so as not to cause the botox to migrate to other, unintended areas. Likewise, you may also benefit from remaining upright for at least four hours following your botox injection and refrain from any strenuous activity or exercise.
While there may be slight swelling or inflammation at the injection site, a cold compress gently applied may offer immediate soothing and help to reduce any redness, swelling, or discomfort you temporarily experience. If indicated by your physician, Tylenol may also provide relief.
The side effects from botox injections vary from person to person. A thorough consultation with your skincare specialist prior to treatment will document and review all allergies, personal care products, allergies, and potential issues you may experience. Rarely, patients may experience an allergic reaction to the botox injection. These symptoms will be far more severe than the mild side effects mentioned, and may include:
- Swelling of the tongue or throat
- Swelling of the face, including eyelids or lips
- Swelling of the hands and/or feet
- Hives or itchy rash
- Extreme flushing and/or redness of the skin
Allergic reactions of this nature may be serious. In the event of an allergic reaction, although very rare, contact your physician immediately*.
